Augmentation of healthcare is still to be taken up with purchase of Purchase of Protective Personal Equipment
The world we live in is not new to shocks, economic & Social, but Covid is exposing the faultlines even in systems with best Medicare having sound health infrastructure and spending on health.
Globally preparedness to handle the Corona virus Disease -Covid-19 had delayed systemic response mechanism though these societies are known for the social discipline during crisis or coordinated plan of action from government of the day.
In our case we are yet to come to terms with Covid as we kept waiting for a case or two to knock at our doorstep so as to activate out defense setup into action. Only thing on our side is time which could best be utilised to take timely decision.
The augmentation of healthcare is still to be taken up with purchase of Purchase of Protective Personal Equipment (PPE), ventilators, masks especially isolation facilities away from secondary and tertiary hospitals for minimal rate of infection to those visiting for routine consultation.
How Covid infection is different from other calamities has to be understood. Earlier during any such contingency it was Community led response which absorbed the initial shock helping in restoration of Normal life.
Classical example of Community participation is our robust robust networks with youth volunteering during crisis as seen in earthquake of 2005, floods 2018. This self-activating response organic is in its making.
The case with Covid-19 is that of self-discipline wherein it is expected everyone has to go into some sort of self-imposed quarantine and stay informed about do's and don’t’s in case of an infection.
So everyone is locked up, still those trained as QRT and emergency care are there on ground and doing the best they could. Emphasis should be more on training, capacity building of more People.
We have wider volunteer base but unorganised which needs more of a directional approach to make an impact.
The generation seasoned to safeguard those in distress in any calamity has to pause and rethink. Before we vouch to volunteer unprepared or just assemble as a programmed response mechanism we have to bear in our minds we are aggravating the Covid-19 spread, and actually putting resources which are already under stress out of equilibrium.
Any distressful condition brings with it a parallel propqaganda of misinformation, fake news & concocted stories about the real situation on ground. More and more people fall prey to misinformation without verifying facts, unable to distinguish facts from fiction.
The impact of misinformation on our community during this crisis situation can be devastating, harmful to community. At this juncture it can cause harm to people, disrupt public peace, lead public opinion, and create conflicts between people.
This can be countered by having a robust public information channels opened to reach out to public. Prime Minister, who is also Chairman of National Disaster Management Authority NDMA in his very concerned address to nation stressed on this aspect of pandemic, clearly stated to avoid falling in fake news trap when many do take to social media.
The message has to percolate deep into social psyche that difficult times shouldn't be used for one's own end.
The delay in declaration of emergency like measures which are pegged as last resort to curb Covid-19 raise many questions. Does the country wide lock down speaks of standard medical preparedness which is inadequate in terms of infrastructure, doctor density proportional to population. India is already heading towards an economic slowdown now this, so the bitter pill.
Nevertheless imposed lock down is imperative to break the deadly cycle of spread containing it now before going Italy way. It is widely advocated that social distancing is the way forward, so the nationwide lockdown is well thought.
It may have profound financial implications on the economy which is slowly going sluggish but surely it can have an impact on Covid spread.
Let's act together to save us from one of the potential threats which can become an epidemic if goes unchecked, cost in terms of effect on health, economy in that scenario would be far more than what we can imagine!
