Advisor to Lt. Governor, K.K. Sharma Wednesday said that the efforts are underway to promote adventure sports and tourism in a big way so that the Jammu and Kashmir becomes one of the most sought after destinations globally.
The Advisor was speaking at a prize distribution ceremony here at Gulmarg organized Department of Tourism in connection with the celebration of New Year.
The Advisor said that the Union Territory is replete with all the necessary topographical and geographical features, which are necessary for promoting adventure sports, tourism and the requisite mechanism has been put in place for roping in major international players. He said that the same would ensure that Jammu and Kashmir emerges as one of the most sought after destinations in this category, which would in turn give the tourist industry a much needed boost and fillip.
While enumerating the measures being taken for promotion of the overall tourism in the Union Territory, the Advisor said several promotional activities and fairs have been done recently in different parts of the country for ensuring that the tourist flow to this part of India increases. “This would in turn contribute to the economy besides generating employment opportunity to the locals and skilled youth”, he added.
The celebrations began at 7 pm at Gulmarg and lasted till 12 mid night in which night skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating where held under lights. Besides, the service providers also participated in the various snow sports races like All Terrain Vehicle, Snow Mobiles, Sledge rides.
The skiers trained by the tourism department last week demonstrated their skills at nigh ski events. Cultural programmes and prize distribution ceremony were held at Gulmarg Golf Club later at night after the culmination of night ski at Gulmarg slopes.
A colorful programmes on the eve of New Year 2020 was also held here at Pahalgam Club.
The District Development Commissioner, Anantnag, Khalid Jahangir who was the Chief Guest on the occasion hailed the efforts of the department for organizing such an event at the international tourist destination. The DDC the officers of the Tourism Department to organizing programmes related to cultural and sports activities & on adventure tourism to boost tourism sector in the district. He also directed the concerned to involve local youth in tourism activities besides providing marketing facilities to dealers of Kashmir arts.
The highlight of the programme was musical presentations by famous singer, Shafi Sopori and 9 year old Ayian, a budding singer.
Among others, the Programme was attended by CEO, PDA, Dr. Nasir Ahmad, ADC, Anantnag, Shaik Gulam Hassan ,Deputy Director Tourism, Syed Shabir, SDM’s of Phalagam and Kokernag, senior civil officers from district administration and officers of Tourism and JKTDC.
