Governor, others condole demise
The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad died on Tuesday. He was 82.
Mufti Bashiruddin was hospitalised on Monday evening after he complained of chest pain, his family said.
He breathed his last at the hospital around 3 am.
Bashiruddin was the Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir for over three decades. He got a masters degree in Arabic and a law degree from Aligarh Muslim University before pursuing religious education.
The funeral prayers for the Grand Mufti were held in afternoon at Khanqah-e-Moula in the downtown at 3.30 pm.
The funeral prayer was led by his son Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam.
Mufti Nasir said the congregational Fateha Khawani of late Mufti Bashir-ud-Din would be held on Friday at 2:45pm at their ancestral graveyard at Maharaj Gunj.
Mufti Nasir is likely to succeed his father as the Grand Mufti of the state.
His death has been widely mourned with political leaders sending condolence messages.

Governor Satya Pal Malik expressed grief over the demise of Mufti Bashir-ud-Din.
In his message, he prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family in its hour of grief.
National Conference Vice President and former chief minister, Omar Abdullah extended condolences with the bereaved family.
"May Allah grant heaven to Mufti Bashir-ud-Din. My condolences to the family at this time of great personal loss," Omar tweeted.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and said, “Kashmir has lost a respected religious scholar ad thought leader in him.”
"Sad to learn about passing away of Mufti Bashiruddin saheb. In him Kashmir lost a respected religious scholar and thought leader... Stand in solidarity with the family and followers of Mufti saheb," Mehbooba tweeted.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief G A Mir also condoled the death of Mufti Bashir U Din.
He described Grand Mufti as ‘an illustrious son of the soil’, who has contributed immensely to the religious education, he will always be remembered for his head and heart qualities.
Mir conveyed deepest condolences to bereaved family of Grand Mufti and sympathized with them, he also prayed for eternal peace to departed soul.
All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC), Jagmohan Singh Raina also expressed grief over the demise of Grand Mufti.
He said the Grand Mufti was a great religious cleric, who would be remembered for his work.
He prayed for the eternal peace to the departed soul.
