Students hit streets to protest against killings of Rohingya Muslims
Lawyers in Shopian and Pulwama took out protest rallies against NIA for serving notice to Kashmir Bar President Mian Qayoom.
The lawyers staged a peaceful protest rally outside district court complex Shopian while holding placards which read, “Stop Persecution of Lawyers” and “In Solidarity with Mian Abdul Qayoom”.
Earlier, District Bar Association Shopian had issued a statement asking all its members to suspend work in all the courts in view of NIA notice to Qayoom over alleged “terror funding case”. The statement further read, “The District Bar Association Shopian feels that it is merely an intimidating tactic used by the State to muzzle voices of the lawyer community of Kashmir. The Bar strongly condemns such persecution and reaffirms that all the lawyers of District Bar Association SHopian stand with Mian Abdul Qayoom.”
Similar protests were held in Pulwama town by the Pulwama Bar Association. The lawyers marched from district court complex Pulwama up to main Chowk and later on dispersed peacefully.
Work also remained suspended in district court Anantnag as lawyers abstained from all work here too.
Meanwhile, hundreds of students on Tuesday afternoon hit the streets in main town Pulwama to protest against the killings of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
Students belonging to Boys Degree College Pulwama took out a protest rally up to main Chowk which was not stopped by the police or other government forces anywhere. They were demanding an end to the civilian killings at the hands of majority Buddhist community of Myanmar, which has forced thousands to flee the country.
After the rally had dispersed peacefully, some of the students went to the Police Station Pulwama and pelted stones on police. Police later on swung into action and lobbed several tear gas shells to disperse the stone throwing youth. The clashes went on for couple of hours in the main town Pulwama.
