Three Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants were killed in a gunfight with militants in Tral area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Sunday.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by Police, paramilitary CRPF and Army following an intelligence about the presence of militants in Gujar Basti Gulshanpora area of Tral Saturday night.
He said during the search operation, the hiding militants opened gunfire at the forces who retaliated, leading in a gunfight.
Kumar said in the initial exchange of gunfire two militants were killed while the third militant, who changed the location, was killed in next gun contact.
The killed militants were identified as Umer Fayaz Lone alias Hamad Khan of Seer Tral, Faizan Hamid of Mandoora Tral and Adil Bashir Mir alias Abu Dujana of Monghama Tral.
The IGP Kashmir said Khan was the most-wanted militant and involved in attacks on civilians and forces during the past two years.
“He was also involved in recruiting youth to militancy,” Kumar said.
While the cordon was being laid, Kumar said the militants were asked to surrender but they did not lay down the arms and opened fire instead.
“The trio, as per Police records, was affiliated with Hizb and were wanted by law for their complicity in crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian,” Police said in a statement.
According to the Police records, Umer had a long history of militancy records since 2016 and was involved in planning and executing several attacks in the area.
