AIIMS Jammu: 13 types of infra facilities established, 95% civil work completed

Jammu, Dec 23: With 13 types of infrastructural facilities established at the AIIMS construction site in the Vijaypur area of Samba district in Jammu province, almost 95% of the civil work on the prestigious project has been completed. The remaining civil work would be completed within 6 months as the national-level healthcare facility is expected to be commissioned by May 2023.
Dr. Shakti Gupta, Director Jammu AIIMS said that 13 facilities established at Vijaypur include two batching plants (60 cum/hour on the northern campus and 30 cum/hour on the southern campus of the hospital), a computer numeric control (CNC) machine stirrups cutting and bending, 16 number of tower cranes, 20KI capacity diesel dump unit to control carbon footprint, several labour huts of 3000 capacity with all the facilities, a safety park for daily safety pep-talks and demonstration, a community health centre with dedicated MBBS doctor to provide holistic care and giving exposure to medical students to understand needs of the community, the establishment of various storage yards and quality labs, a training centre for skill development programme under National Skill Development Programme, the establishment of tyre washing area to minimize dust outside and 12-metre height barricading at NH and 3 metre barricading at rest of the periphery.
It is important to mention here that the union cabinet approved the proposal for the establishment of Jammu AIIMS under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in January 2019. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 3, 2019.
The work for the project was entrusted to Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for execution and the A/A & E/S amounting to Rs 1661 Cr (Rs 1404 Cr for construction for the hospital, medical college and other infrastructure + Rs. 257 Cr for Medical Equipment and Furniture) was issued by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH& FW) in March 2019 with target date of commissioning set as Aug 2023.
Initial funds to the tune of Rs 50 Cr for the establishment of AIIMS was made available by MoH&FW through HEFA (Higher Education Financing Agency), but after that fund was made available by MoH& FW through GBS (Government Budgetary system).
About AIIMS Jammu
AIIMS Jammu site is located at National Highway 44 which divides the total campus having areas of 226.84 acres into two campuses viz., North Campus of 96.90 acres that house hospitals and academic buildings and South Campus of 129.95 acres that houses hostels and staff housing. The two campuses are connected by an underpass. The work of a comprehensive consultant for AIIMS Jammu (Phase -1) was entrusted to M/S ARCOP Associate Pvt. Ltd, Delhi. The work was awarded a date of commencement of February 22, 2020, to M/S Ahluwalia Contract (India) Limited.
Salient features of the project
The total construction area in phase-1 is 2, 25, 205 sq m with the development of premises, infrastructure, and civil and electrical facilities. In the first phase, a 750-bedded facility would be established at the hospital while in the second and third phases, 1500 and 2200 bedded facilities would be established at the hospital. The 750-bedded hospital building will have the provision of MRI, CT, PET Scan, Nuclear Medicine, Modular OT, ICU, Super Specialty departments, OPD, and Trauma Beds. A 30-bedded two-storey Ayush building is also being established under the AIIMS project in Jammu.
As far as the intake capacity of the institution is concerned, Dr. Shakti Gupta, Director Jammu AIIMS, said it would be 150 MBBS students per year while the intake capacity of the nursing college would be 60 B.Sc. Nursing students per year. The current intake capacity of the MBBS students in the first, second and third phases is 50, 61 and 61 batches of MBBS students per year.
A total of 230 staff housing is also being constructed in multi-storeyed towers along with the construction of a Director Bungalow, provision of UG Boys & Girls Hostel, PG Boys and Girls Hostel, PG Married Hostel and Nursing Hostel. All the buildings are designed with the provision of Seismic Zone 5.
There would also be the provision of a helipad for catering to the critical and trauma patients to be shifted by Air Ambulance to AIIMS Jammu. There would be the provision for a sports club, cricket stadium, basketball court, lawn tennis court, squash court, surface parking for 3284 equivalent car spaces, a night shelter for attendants having a capacity of 256 numbers and a guest house facility having a capacity of 26.
The two campuses would be connected through 2 motorable and 2 pedestrian underpasses. There would be a provision of two additional pedestrian crossings at different locations for staff and students’ movement along with other high-tech facilities.
