Jambu Zoo to be thrown open to public tomorrow

JAMMU, May 27: The much awaited Jamboo Zoo at Jammu, the largest zoo in North India, will be thrown open for the public on May 29 by the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

Named after the king of Jammu, Jamboo Lochan, the Jamboo zoo was conceptualised in 2016. 

“The Jamboo Zoo will be thrown open for general public on Monday,” DFO Amit Sharma informed Rising Kashmir, while adding, “the LG will inaugurate the largest zoo of North India on May 29 at 11 am.

All arrangements, including security, water management, animal enclosures safety of animals and staff have been put in place and reviewed several times before throwing open for the public.

All the wild animals and birds from Manda Zoo have been shifted to Jamboo Zoo and the trial runs of these animals and birds have also been done successfully several times to make sure they get acclimatised to the new zoo .

The Wildlife Department has put in place 19 animal enclosures in the Zoo to keep protected the rare and attractive animals’ and birds’ species.

The Jamboo Zoo is coming up at Khanpur, Nagrota, in the outskirts of Jammu City and is spread over an area of 162 hectares (3200 kanals).

A total of 27 species of the rare animals and birds are to be brought from different states of the country and will be kept in the Jamboo Zoo.

Royal Bengal Tigers, the Asiatic Lions, the Black Bucks (Kala Hiran) and the commonly known Gadiyals and the Crocodiles are the main attractions of Jamboo Zoo.

Except, Chandigarh, the Royal Bengal Tigers, the Black  Bucks and the Asiatic Lions are nowhere there in any of the zoos in North India.

“Due to high temperature here in Jammu these days, these rare animals will be shifted from other states in Jamboo Zoo some time later when the temperature becomes favourable for them,” the DFO said.
