First slide

Jammu Railway Station caters to multitude of passengers that reach the Union Territory from all parts of India and also the passengers that travel to the various parts of the country from Jammu and Kashmir. More prominent being the pilgrims that pay obeisance at Shree Mata Vaishno Devi Ji in Katra in Jammu. Their number runs into lakhs every month in peak seasons and reaches an average of one crore every year. Not only that personnel of defence forces and other all India services use the station for their arrival and departure in Jammu and Kashmir. One can imagine the importance of Jammu Railway Station for the passenger management every day. As such it needs special attention. Railway Station in itself represents the barometer of the best tourism service that a state or union territory can offer to the tourists. As it is the railway station or an airport that gives the first impression of the civic sense to the tourist on the arrival at the destination area. Unfortunately, the Jammu railway Station gives a very shabby look. Its ambience presents it as some filthy area that is either an unattended place having no one to bother for the hygiene and cleanliness or dumping ground. The entrance is itself a spectacle of a place that is contaminated by urine and excreta smell that lead to vomiting and complete helplessness. It is difficult to enter the railway station while passing through the taxi stand that lacks proper lighting arrangement. The stairs that lead to the main entrance of the platforms present a congested scene. Platforms are a nightmare with people lying down and taking meals and spreading the garbage openly. A total mismanagement can be seen. It is difficult to stand for more than a minute at one place as the foul smell from the rails is completely unbearable. Besides the congestion presents a scene of chaos. The passengers and the people who arrive at the railway station to see off their near ones can act as carriers of serious diseases and viruses. The filth and garbage besides the contaminated things lying at various places make the railway station an epicentre of health threat. Administration needs to completely upgrade the Jammu railway Station so that it can cater to the passenger needs. It is an urgent need to give it a complete facelift. So that the unhygienic condition of the railway station is addressed. This sends a negative message as lakhs of tourists arrive and depart from here. The negative word of mouth is spoiling the tourism prospects of Jammu in particular and Jammu and Kashmir in general. There is utmost need to develop the infrastructure and maintain proper waiting areas so that crowd is minimised and people are given a hassle free stay. When a lot of hue and cry is made for the Jammu Smart City, the policy makers must internalise the railway stations, airports and bus stands need a complete facelift and declared garbage free zones. So that these points do not turn into epicentres of diseases and hotbeds of crime due to neglect. The unhealthy look and the stink that engulfs the Jammu Railway Station is having a negative impact on the tourist psyche and sending a bad word of mouth. The Jammu and Kashmir administration must devise a comprehensive policy to develop the Jammu Railway Station as a green and clean railway station that is free from garbage, human excreta and urine stink.
