Srinagar, Mar 31: In Srinagar, the Masjid-e-Bilal (RDA) located on the Bund has become a beacon of generosity during the holy month of Ramadan. With its beautiful setting on the banks of the Jhelum River and vast lawns, this mosque is renowned for its hospitality, especially during Iftar.
Every day, at least 500 people gather at Masjid-e-Bilal to break their fast, and the number sometimes swells to 600. Volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that nobody leaves hungry, laying out rows of tablecloths in the park in front of the mosque and making arrangements from the early morning hours.
Fayaz Ahmad, one of the volunteers, shared that the tradition of facilitating Iftar at Masjid-e-Bilal has been upheld for decades. Initially, juice and biscuits were served, but in recent years, the menu has been expanded. The mosque's management also provides assistance to the poor and underprivileged through various donations during Ramadan.
The central location of Masjid-e-Bilal in the heart of the city attracts a diverse crowd, including students from far-off areas who stay in the city for academic purposes. Even tourists and people from distant places make their way to the mosque to experience the spirit of Ramadan and break their fast in congregation.
Preparations for Iftar begin early in the morning, with volunteers bringing fruits from the market and starting the arrangements by 10:00 am. As the day progresses, more volunteers join in after Asr prayers to ensure everything runs smoothly.
During Iftar, the atmosphere at Masjid-e-Bilal is filled with reverence and devotion. People can be seen weeping, crying, and seeking mercy for humanity, connecting deeply with their Creator.
The volunteers meticulously distribute fruit plates, basil seed drinks, and dates to each row, ensuring that everyone is served with care and respect. The discipline maintained at the mosque adds to its allure, attracting people from all walks of life.
According to the volunteers facilitating Iftar for others is considered a noble deed in the eyes of Allah. They believe that similar systems should be implemented in marketplaces during Ramadan to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to break their fast in a dignified manner.
