Sonmarg, Jan 04: For the inaugural time, Sonamarg, a prominent tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, has opened its doors to tourists during the winter season. The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA), in collaboration with the Ice-Skating Association of UT J&K, initiated an unprecedented Ice-Skating Camp, marking a historic milestone in the region's tourism landscape.
The newly established Ice-Skating Rink, a result of tremendous efforts led by Dr. Ilyas, CEO of SDA, has become a focal point in attracting visitors. Ashraf Dijoo, General Secretary and National Coach of the Ice-Skating Association of UT J&K, undertook the responsibility of conducting the Ice-Skating Basic Course tailored for local students from Shitkadi and Sonamarg villages. The 15-day camp commenced on December 23, 2023, and is scheduled to conclude on January 7, 2024.
This pioneering engagement of local students, coupled with the creation of the Ice-Skating Rink at Sonamarg, has garnered widespread appreciation from diverse spheres of society. The influx of tourists was notably observed during the New Year celebrations, jointly organized by the J&K Tourism Department and the SDA, a novel occurrence for the region. This initiative is poised to significantly boost tourism in Sonamarg and augment the economic prospects for locals and hoteliers, provided that the Z-More tunnel remains operational throughout the winter season.
The prospects of sustained tourism in Sonamarg are promising, thanks to these innovative endeavors that blend local engagement, winter sports, and tourist attractions, signaling a potential economic upsurge in the region.
