The Jammu and Kashmir Government has made significant changes to key law enforcement positions. Vidhi Kumar Birdi has been appointed as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, while Vijay Kumar has been assigned the role of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order in the region.
As per the order, Vijay Kumar, an IPS officer from the 1997 AGMUT cadre, has been transferred from his previous position as ADGP Kashmir to ADGP (Law and Order). This new role, temporarily added to the J&K Segment of AGMUT Cadre, is set for a duration of two years or until it is handed over to another officer, whichever comes earlier.
Furthermore, Vidhi Kumar, an IPS officer from the 2003 AGMUT cadre, will also take on the responsibilities of IGP Armed Kashmir until further instructions are provided.
According to the order, the Zonal Inspectors General of Police (IGsP) in Kashmir and Jammu will now report to the ADGP (Law and Order) in J&K, with the overall command and control under the Director General of Police (DGP).
These changes are effective immediately and are part of the government's efforts to streamline the administration.
It's worth noting that on September 21, Vidhi Kumar was repatriated from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and returned to his parent cadre of AGMUT (Jammu and Kashmir) by the central government. He had been serving as IG at CRPF, and this repatriation was carried out in accordance with the IPS Tenure Policy. The Centre has also requested the DG, CRPF to provide the date of his relieving from the current position.
In 2021, Vidhi Kumar, an experienced IPS officer, was serving as DIG at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and was honored with the third bar to the Police Medal for Gallantry for his exceptional contributions in the fight against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, Vidhi Kumar has previously served as IG at CRPF in Maoist and naxal affected areas in Jharkhand.
